In respect for the holiday, I took the day off. Bob took off for the boat early this morning and I rolled over in this big bed and went right back to sleep. I awoke at 9:00am, delighted in the sunshine, had a nice cup of tea and some toast and wandered outside. My neighbor mentioned she was going to West Marine so I offered to give her a ride in the Mini and went with her and got an adapter for the plug at our new dock. When I got back, it was about 11:00am and it wasn't even clouding over yet so I put on my bathing suit, gossiped with Karen, the owner for a bit and then set myself up on a float in the water and relaxed. It was probably about this time that Bob decided I wasn't coming to the boat but I knew he wouldn't mind. I had been cleaning for 3 days straight and felt like a very underpaid cleaning lady. When the sky started clouding up, I got dressed and headed for the Sports Authority where I bought a pair of roller blades. The rest of the day I spent yacking with a third neighbor from England and then I came in to start dinner. Bob wandered in about 6:45pm looking dirty and tired. He said I was getting burned out and was glad I took a day off.

Tomorrow our broker comes to hang the official "For Sale" sign, we may have a showing and I will clean some more and prepare to start staining on Saturday. Things are moving along quite well thanks to all of Bob's hard work.

The skies are crackling with fireworks and I hop out to watch once in awhile but Bob was too pooped to walk to the beach and watch. Three years ago to the day, we flew down here to Ft. Lauderdale to begin our adventure. The next year we watched fireworks in Annapolis with all of our friends. The year after we were in Trinidad and now we have come full circle. Happy Anniversary to us as well!

Could I BE any more pooped? We're working so hard and making no money. It's amazing. Today I stained the cockpit and both sides of the boat, 3 panels each side down the whole boat. I had to do this up on scaffolding, which was pretty tricky, being afraid of heights and all. I got up there and wobbled around. It was very hard for me to bend down, while holding on for dear life, and dip the brush. As I went from bow to stern, it got easier because the boat is lower. It got really tricky when I started getting low on stain and I had to dip WAY down in that bucket. I had one rag in my right pocket for boo boos and another rag to wipe the sweat off. Later in the day I had to wear a glove on my left hand to hold onto the boat because the sun was so hot that it was burning my palm. I have a small blister on my left palm to show for it.
who? Me afriad? You betcha! Bob seems to be always at work!

Bob was busy taping and moving the ladders and scaffolding around. He also cleaned up the rub rail and ran out for lunch. It was so much nicer to be outside than inside cleaning. My back got a good dose of sun but it's not burnt. We got done about 3:30pm came home by separate cars and grabbed a cold drink. I think all told, we drank 5 bottles of water today. Bob got the shower first and I was waiting in line. He laughed at me and said, "you can't wait to get in here, can you?" I actually took a wash cloth and got my skin squeaky-clean. My body is so tired and I can hear Bob just fell asleep on the couch. Of course he was watching golf so it's perfectly understandable. We're going to the store to buy some good steaks, which we'll grill out with, baked potatoes and I'll make a green salad. Another good night's sleep awaits.

Although it rained on and off most of the day, we did get a lot done. We weren't able to stain the outside wood (and I was so looking forward to going up on the scaffolding) but we got some odds and ends done. Our generator part finally made it in today and hopefully the guy will show up in the next couple of days to install it. We think we're doing pretty good, time wise and may even make it out of here when we planned. Our rental car is due back on the 12th and our rental apartment is up on the morning of the 15th. There is someone waiting for it so I think there may not be any leeway. Dinner is soon and I'm starved so bye for now.

The last dinghy ride

July 14, 2002

WE'RE DONE!!!!! Six weeks of battling thunderstorms alternating with severe heat, exhaustion and monotony is over. And just let me say, it's been awful. There is not one place on my body that isn't sore, cramped, cut or has a rash. If I ever start a new web site because I bought another boat, please just commit me. Well, Mutual Fun looks incredible. Just like when we bought her 3 years ago. Her teak is beautiful and the fiberglass shines and the inside is spotless. If there is a buyer out there who wants a Hans Christian, you won't find a nicer one.

Tomorrow we start our trek north. We might have stayed an extra day to relax but we're being ousted by a couple moving back to land from their boat. We'll stop in Vero Beach and visit with Don and Gloria on "Zaftra" and spend the night. I sure hope all of our bags fit in the car. It's so teeny.

July 16, 2002

We did our laundry, cleaned the apartment, finished packing and ran some errands. We finally got underway about 12:30pm and had a nice drive to Vero Beach. Gloria got ½ day off and Don finishes his job, building watermakers, about 3:00pm. We had a great dinner and then just hung around the marina where we saw a couple of other people we knew from 3 years ago. Gloria wanted to take a stroll on the beach and I can't ever remember not wanting to do that but I was so tired, I could barely stand. Bob was, too. We begged off and went to our motel room to crash. Bob and I were both bummed that we were so tired and couldn't enjoy our friends more.

Today we drove the 150 miles to St. Augustine. This would have taken 30 hours in the boat and since we took the scenic route, it took 4 hours. We got our hotel room about 2:00pm and since it was so hot, we didn't go exploring right away. Bob watched TV and dozed while I swam and relaxed by (mostly in) the pool. We've just come back from a little local diner with bellies full of meat loaf and mashed potatoes. So far, life on land is fun.

A full day of driving and sightseeing included Beaufort and Charleston, SC and now we're holed up in Myrtle Beach. Beaufort (Bufort, SC as compared to Bofort, NC) was a darling little town that we missed in the sailboat. Charleston was also great. The mansions were beautiful. Yesterday hit 101 degrees (actual temperature) so we didn't walk around much but today was only 94 degrees so we managed a little walk around downtown historic Charleston. We are staying at the Hampton Inn here so I got to do some laps in the pool before dinner. Now, I'm bushed as I did all the driving today. Actually, I've done all of the driving so far. I am enjoying driving my little car around. Good night for now.

What a fun day! The Outer Banks of North Carolina are so beautiful, calm and serene.
Bob at the famous T-rays Exon in Fernandino, Fla On the ferry to Ocracoke, next to the Mini

We drove about an hour to catch the first car-ferry to Ocracoke. It was a 2-½ hour ferry ride and really fun for me. I met some interesting people; one couple driving around on a big, sleek Honda motorcycle. We decided my car was smaller than their bike. Another girl just starting a real estate career. Once in Ocracoke, we drove off the ferry, got a cold drink and then headed for the Cape Hatteras ferry. This was only a 40-minute ride but they called for the car in front of me to be the last car until they took a look at the Mini. They motioned me forward and squeezed us into a tiny little space. The ferry guy motioned to me to roll down the window and he said, "I just had to see if it would fit." It was a great ride and once in Cape Hatteras, I couldn't wait to see the ocean. As we drove out of town, I could see the ocean on our right, over the hill but Bob told me to have patience. We drove to the actual point of Cape Hatteras,

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

saw the famous lighthouse and then went to the beach. I was too excited to change into a bathing suit but I did have the top on so I went right in with my shorts. Bob just watched. The ocean has quite a pull there and it took me quite awhile to work up the nerve to go in past my ankles. There were some kids on small surfboards and a few people swimming close in but nobody very far out. Once back at the car, I had to take everything off, dry off with one of Bob's dirty shirts and put on some dirty clothes. We then drove to Elizabeth City in northern NC and looked for a room. One thing we are quite surprised about is hotel prices. We used to love to stay at the Hampton Inn but now they're so expensive.
The Hamptons

We stopped there first and it was $125 for the night. This is not a time-share, this is a night. The next place we tried was $95 a night and so here we are at a Days Inn. It's pretty disgusting. Next to the lamp something is squashed on the wall. It's big and unidentifiable. The bedspread is greasy. There are a dozen cigarette burns on the sink and the carpet is rather gross. All this for only $76. To the good, I had a long, steamy shower for a really long time. The sheets seem clean so I'm here and I'm going to stay here.

Tomorrow we are going to see Hampton, VA, where we left for Bermuda and Williamsburg. We will NOT be staying at a Days Inn tomorrow night. I'd rather just drive straight home than have to worry about turning on the light if I have to get up in the middle of the night, for fear of cockroaches. Yuk!

July 22, 2002

Yesterday was a day of a lot of driving with few stops. We did stop at Yorktown, Virginia to see the battleground and parked for the night at the BWI airport in a Red Roof Inn. It was a great room. We went to dinner at the Golden Corral, which turned out to be a huge buffet place. We were just standing at the exit looking things over when a waitress approached us, said to come with her and sat us down. She brought over 6 plates and told us the scoop. If we gave her a $10 tip, our dinner would be free. Not knowing whether this was a new-people's special or not, we agreed and pigged out on pot roast, ribs, prime rib, mac and cheese and desserts and drinks, gave her 10 bucks and left. My tummy was stuffed.

Today we left for the short drive to Annapolis. Well, it would have been short if I hadn't taken a wrong turn and ended up in downtown Baltimore in morning rush hour. Once we finally got to Annapolis, we couldn't find any of our friends so we took off for Washington. Through more traffic we landed in front of the Capitol,

Me and the Capitol

parked and walked up. Upon our return to the car, we saw a guy giving tickets to those of us without a permit. He hadn't gotten to us yet but once we tried to sneak off, we might have made it if we wouldn't have been going the wrong way on a one-way street. Well, the Mini saved us and we chatted for awhile and he let us leave. We headed over to the White House,
Bob finally makes it to the Whitehouse

took the mandatory pictures, went to a New York deli for lunch and returned to where we thought we parked. Couldn't find the car. We had to walk all the way back to the White House to get our bearings and Bob spotted the Mini on the street. We hightailed out of Washington and made it to Frederick, Maryland by 4:00pm. Conventions in town booking many hotels brought us to our first Holiday Inn Express. It's a nice, little room for $80. Tomorrow I haven't a clue what Bob has planned but Wednesday we'll be in Dayton to see our friends, Eric and Susan from "Elysia." Eric's been home working for a year and they hope to be back to their boat, left in Vero Beach, Florida, by November.
